• Question: What type of engineering do you do?

      I am a medical engineer – my work looks at mechanical testing of implants for the ankle and so I need to understand how the joint moves, what kind of loads go through it when we do things like walk, climb stairs etc, and I then work out how the best way is to recreate that in a test. It’s a lot of fun and really interesting!

      I am a medical engineer, in that I make things that doctors use. I am also a mechanical engineer, because the skills I use are all about mechanics, such as how things move.

      I’m a medical engineer, but I also get involved in quite a few mechanical engineering projects too.
      The main part of my work looks at how we can help the body to heal quicker using different technologies. Some of the technology is used by astronauts, whilst others is used in cars – it’s really varied. It’s really cool being able to solve problems with solutions that already exist somewhere else!

      I am a chemical engineer (sometimes called a process engineer). Our job is to take the ideas of chemists and biologists and figure out how to do produce things on a really big scale.
      For example, if a new vaccine is discovered, chemical engineers will have a really important role in designing factories to produce enough vaccines for all the people that need them. Or you might have seen that some industrial plants have been redesigned to make more hand sanitiser – chemical engineers would have done that too!

      I am a mechanical engineer. I design and develop the metal, plastic and carbon fibre components within artificial limbs.

      Eventhough I’m a Telecommunications Engineer by training, I’ve moved into technical project management so I don’t do any core engineering stuff anymore. My work sits between the engineering and management teams. So i’m required to have a good high level understanding of various engineering streams/topics (depending on the scope of a project) and manage resources (time, money, people) to make sure a project delivers what it promised.

    You could call it a naval architect designing boats so that they:
    A – Stay together in the conditions that the owner will be out on the water
    B – Go really quickly (as that’s generally what our owners want their boats to do) or sometimes to be really efficient so that they don’t burn as much fuel
