  From a design perspective, there are certain things that we keep in mind when designing train stations and footbridges near train tracks to make sure that this doesn’t happen. For example, that the platforms are designed to give enough space away from the tracks. Or we design handrails/parapets along footbridges to be a certain height. These are based on design guidelines that we follow to produce safe designs.

When working on the railway, we have a number of methods to keep us all safe from electrocution (and trains). Sometimes we close some railway lines completely, and switch the power off so there is no risk of electrocution. Sometimes we can cover the electrical equipment with special shields, and other times we have to stay a safe distance away from the electrical equipment (third rail or overhead lines) but the power stays switched on. With all these controls in place, we are safe working on the railway.
